Someone once told me about seeing a powerhammer with a cup-like socket
bolted to the treadle. Asked about its purpose and was told that the
old smith who used it had lost a foot, made himself a peg leg and
attached the socket to the treadle so he could stand on his good foot
and operate the hammer with his peg.
I've forgotten where I heard that story so I guess it's now in the
domain of blacksmith myth. Er, or is that "blacksmyth"? :-)
