I've been fortunate never to have been hit with these tendon problems
but I've worried a bit about it from early on because I have a steel
bolt in my elbow (teen-age hockey) and a somewhat mungled right hand
(teen-age rocket science).  No missing fingers but two that don't quite
work right and another with a frozen distal joint.)

My two defensive strategies:

   Avoid a too-heavy hammer, and

   shape all my hammer handles with a draw knife and rasp to what
   feels like optimal grip.  That means rather flat and slender
   handles and also a bevel to accomodate the lumpy, frozen
   middle-finger joint.
