Back around 1989 I did a lot of light fixtures for a new house being
constructed. All the more experienced smiths I knew advised me not to do
the wiring myself, to avoid potential liability. I looked into UL but
there was no way it could work for one of a kind pieces. The electrician
was fine about doing the wiring. I just made my prices and agreement on
this basis. I dealt directly with the house owners and they just told
the contractor to have the electrician wire the fixtures.

I made wall fixtures and chandeliers. Had to do some research to find
how it was done - what parts to use. I was able to get a lighting supply
catalog from a wholesale company, then buy through a local distributor
when the distributor placed his orders. Now with the internet, getting
supplies should be even easier.

Now I have product liability insurance (part of the Hartford package
insurance package available through ABANA) but even now I'd do it the
same way again - have the electrician actually run the wires and connect
them.
