There is no sheet metal shroud- a self contained air hammer is just one big
casting, with two cylinders bored thru it from the top, and cover plates
bolted over the cylinder bores. There is a connecting rod in the rear
cylinder, just like in a car engine, and it is in turn connected to a shaft
that the motor spins. In the big old chambersburgs and nazels, this is
usually a direct drive- the motor spins a big gear- I have a friend with a
750 or 800lb chambersburg, and the gear is about 6" thick and 2 and half
feet in diameter. This spins a smaller gear, and slows down the drive shaft
speed.
The trickiest part is the valving between the two cylinders that regulates
the slave cylinder (tup) But in general, very few moving parts.
I will see if my chinese owners manual has any exploded diagrams worth
posting on the photo access site.
