Cameron, You didn't happen to take any pictures of these hammers did you??
If you did, I'd love to see them.
Ralph

See my other post - I remembered that the #20000 anvil belongs to a
1000lb chambersburg (which isn't operational), not the 500. The 500lb
hammer has a 5T anvil.
I did get to spend a few days running this hammer - it is quite a trip.
The whole shop thumps with each blow of the tup (it's a dirt floor
shop). I didn't get to do any heavy forging on it, but from what i did
get to do I can say the control on it is amazing. You have the feeling
that the tup will go to whatever height you ask it to regardless of
what'e between the dies. You also get the feeling that were it to hit a
stout bar that wasn't exactly perpendicular to the die that you would
be flung in short order.
Apparently the hammer came from the naval scrapping operation in
portland. Chris Thompson, who is quite good on this hammer, forges out
fire shovel blanks from a 1-1/4" bar over a 'loaf' shaped bottom die in
about 2 minutes.
