[TheForge] Power hammer questions

Alright, Guys how many of you have made a power hammer?  I think an air
compressor running all the time is a pain.  I really dislike noise.  While
the machine is running, I can stand a motor, but don't like air tools near
as much.

That said, I hear all the time about the variable speed control you air
hammer guys have with your valve setups.  Can this be done in a mechanical
hammer?  Is it expensive to do this way?  Is it really needed?  Is there
another way to get a light or hard hit from the same machine without
slipping a clutch?

I have a lot of questions, but not many answers.  Hope you all can supply me
some of them.
