For long lasting coatings, I recommend a high zinc content paint made by =
SEM, actually SEM is now owned by PPG, It comes in rattle cans as well =
as by the gallon.  It is about 50 to 60.00 USD typically, and will last =
as long as 10 years outside if applied over good clean metal.  I =
typically brush, or run my parts through the tumbler, and then clean =
with a pressure washer running on hot water, with a little dish soap in =
it.  The surface does not need to be sand blasted, just scale free.  The =
paint does not require primer, it is primer/topcoat in one step, I =
usually used, White Grey and Black, it help the shop guys make sure the =
product is fully coated, plus the more coats the better the corrosion =
protection.

This product can also be topcoated with any acrylic, urethane or enamel. =
 I use it in my trailer production as a primer / undercoat for =
everything.  Most of these units still look excellent after 5 years of =
road spray even underneath, because the stuff has amazing chip =
resistance.  I live on the south coast of Oregon and I have a flag pole =
erected within 100 yards of the ocean, after 5 years the paint is in =
perfect shape.  I also build equipment for the fishing fleet and =
utilized this same paint, it will last a good two years on a fishing =
boat before needing re-painted.

The SEM paint is available at any Industrial Finishes Locations there =
are bout 50 or so in the US, and I believe a few over sea's.  Almost =
every area has a PPG, or Dupont automotive paint dealer.  The Dupont =
dealers almost always can get the SEM paint, its called RUST SHIELD, and =
the PPG dealers can get the PPG Specialty Coatings, its exactly the same =
paint in the same can with a different label.
