Rob, Aaron;
Buy one? tisk.
Use one? every day just about...invaluable.But then, i do a lot of
chasing and chisel work.
Olivers have been built in a huge range of sizes and designs. You should
consider the work you do and what you would like to do, as well as
eyeballing all the different designs you can, before building one..
Make the anvil as massive as possible and use a solid head ( not hollow
or poured full of lead).
If I had it to do over again, I would consider an in-line design.
Make the throat as deep as possible and still keep it rigid. This will
also give you longer arms for a flatter arc.
It is not a power hammer, though my rather heavy TH can definately
outforge my arm.
Try to get your pivots and bushings as accurate as possible..slop is a
nuisance.
Put safety cables in your springs if they are anywhere near you.
I have a n extra chain from the back post to the hammer shaft in case
something breaks...don't wanna eat that hammer head.
