This sounds like you have a wide flat belt  more commonly used on a line 
shaft, rather than some of the alternate use "V" belts that  I have on my 
25# little giant.

My 50# little giant has the large flat belt with "staple" connectors.

If you can connect with an antique tractor club or  steam threshers 
club,  in your area,  several of the members will  likely  have the tools 
and "staples" to  make a new flat belt.  That way, you won't need to take 
the top off the hammer, disturbing the babbit bearing.
