Shannell,
Here is my take on some of your questions.
1. Guides are a good idea for control, and the life of the cyl.
2. Some are designed to be rebuilt.
3. We just used a simple "L" bracket and LoveJoy connectors.
4. We haven't used our press for drifting. May in the future.
5. We have our foot pedal sprung to stop when released. I think that auto
rise would be bad since we usually position the top die just above the work
for quick response. It would be nasty to have 6" of travel every time we
took out hot steel.
6. We have the two speed pump. But I would prefer just a low speed pump
since it is easy to go too far too fast. I would rather have more control.
7. If you have the stuff in salvage, you can try it, but it may burn up the
motor. If you are buying new get stuff that matches.
8. I don't think guards are necessary on a press. I don't see any parts that
are at risk like on a trip hammer. And you need to keep the dies open.
