I normally use Johnsons Paste Wax mixed with graphite. I use a double 
boiler to melt the wax and add as much graphite as the liquid wax will hold.

For application I remelt the wax over the forge and apply to hot (400+ 
degree) metal, with a rolled up rag. The wax soaks into the metal and chars 
at the proper temperature, the graphite lends the metallic look. the amount 
of shine depends on how much buffing you do.
