[TheForge] Forging Press Pictures

Steve,

We had to cut the original frame at the top to make room for the cylinder.
We built a sub frame to hang the cylinder from starting at the original
crank location. We used the holes that the bairing caps bolted into, went
out, up, and then over. We initially bolted everything together and then
once we had it all worked out welded it up. There is no flex at all in the
frame. We used a 5x8 cylinder but the original ram guides only had 6" of
travel so we put a stroke limiter on the cylinder to keep from pulling the
ram off the guides.

The press is rated at 26 ton.

This was my son's project but I was very involved. He got the punch press
frame for $150 which saved him a lot of time and money. The rest of the
parts and steel were all new and cost him about $1200.

Nice work Bob. Makes me think about looking twice at old press frames. One
question; The original stroke was probably only a few inches. Did you have
to make substantial mods to the guides and ram to get more out of it? What
tonnage is it?

Thanx,
Steve
