[TheForge] hydraulic pump

Hey Dave,
The reason Jim Batson recommends the 2 stage vane pump is so that it can be
driven by 2 to 5 hp single phase motors.
I suspect that the fork lift pump is a single stage unit so it might take a
larger motor to drive it.
You should check the pump for an id plate This would identify the type of
pump and its flow rate ( about 6 gpm is ideal).
It is also critical to match the pump flow volume to the size of your
cylinder.
The optimum ram travel for general smithing is between 1 to 2 ips.
It is also possible to use compensated piston pumps and variable piston
pumps, but they are very expensive and the hose plumbing is different.
(They have an extra case drain hose).
I consider Jim's Hydraulics Primer a must read before you try to build one
yourself.
Chuck
