[TheForge] My mother strikes again- wines....

Phlip,

Thanks for the heads up. I, for one, may give Wal-Mart's efforts a
try. Once, at least.

Having attended the University of California at Davis and worked in
their enology department, one thing I learned about wine is the extreme
level of ignorance of the American consumer. My "house wines" (white
and red) are $7 a bottle - a 4-liter bottle. I arrived at this choice
by the simple expedient of tasting the cheap wines until I found a brand
that was good and didn't leave me with a hang-over.

In France, all the supermarkets carry wines across the whole price
range. Usually only the more expensive wines are exported, so "French"
wines are considered good here. In fact, California wines are every bit
as good, and I've had good wines from New York, New Jersey and
Arkansas.

Wine is like beer. Something to drink. Tastes good. Gives you a
buzz. No need to make more of a fuss over it than that.

ENTONVILLE, ARK (AP) -- Some Wal-Mart customers soon will
be able to sample a new discount item -- Wal-Mart's own brand
of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with E&J
Gallo
Winery of Modesto, Calif., to produce the spirits
at an affordable price, in the $2-$5 range. While wine
connoisseurs may not be inclined to throw a bottle of Wal- Mart brand
wine into their shopping carts, there is a market
for cheap wine, said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at
Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. She said: "The right name
is
important."<snip>
