Jim Batson's book is a really good publication for learning how to
put together a manually operated two section hydraulic press. His plans are
for a 24 ton unit. I used a lot of the info and beefed things up and got
mine to work really well with the 36 ton output mine develops. Jim's and
mine are both C frame units, and the major difference is I put an air hammer
on the back of my tower to save space in the shop.
Chuck Schaeffer builds a really nice electrically controlled unit.
If he writes about his method I will be taking notes. I saw his at LaCrosse
and really liked it. It is an H frame style and worked really well.
Presses are great for heavy material.....or light material done
cold. If you think your going to work a piece of 1/4" flat bar like you
would in a power hammer - your dreaming. The heat will be robbed out of the
material and into the dies in the first squish.
If you goal is to work heavy stock, make tools, and straighten
things faster and easier than ever before.........then this is a tool you
would consider.......and definitely buy Jim's book. I think I got it from
Norm for about $25 or so?
