I don't know if they still carry it, but up until a few years ago ace
hardware carried asphaltum paint. Couple of bucks for a one gallon can, and
you thin it with naphtha or mineral spirits. It's used in the plumbing
industry to protect metals when they are exposed to masonry or concrete. It
is useful as a acid resist for etching. I have used the thinned product to
seal battery terminals from corrosion. It's better than grease type products
as they tend to flow between the post and the battery cable clamp when high
currents are flowing, as in engine starting, thus softening the grease and
allowing capillary action to draw the grease in-between the surfaces.
