hello;
i think i have found something very close to what i had in mind. still
looking into possibly making my own.

sexbolt.pdf pages 17 through 20 have steel connector nuts and bolts.
the steel connector nuts are very close to what i had in mind.
my was a three piece connector:
a connector nut in each slat joined by a threaded stud. each connector
would thread onto the threaded stud. the reason for this is so that the
holes in the slats are all the same size, eliminating the need for two
types of slats. one with the connector nut hole and one with the
connector bolt hole. you could view it as an outside slat and an inside
slat. the outside slat having the connector nut and the inside slat
having the connector bolt.
