Water will just make it worse. As the woo absorbs water it swells.
Crushing the wood cells against the hammer head. So it actually gets
looser as it drys again.
Bust thing is to place the hammer ( head down) into a container of
linseed oil once a week. Will be absorbed into the wood and keep it from
drying
