Maurice,
My first inclination was to say, "Yes, no problem." While you
would lose out on some of the neat features of a VFD, I thought
it would work fine.
But ... (There's always a but, isn't there?)
I recall hearing of problems using a VFD in front of the normal
on/off switches on equipment. The VFD likes to handle switching
and in fact most have programmable ramp up, speed change rates and
braking. The word is that you should do all switching with the
VFD itself.
Perhaps some others on the list have had more experience with this
and could confirm or deny this.
