Mike is right on with a great use for lapping compound.
In my days of power plant steam and gas turbine maintenance lapping compound was our friend for "lapping" in threads as Mike described,
lapping in valve stem backseats, seal rings, valve seats, etc.
In fact I still have cans of Clover compound, A through EE.
We also used lead fuse wire for pinch checking bearing rings, etc.
The old ways are still in use in power plants.
