The reason for this is that the off brand hoods are those that do not meet
the parent company's stringent specifications. While they will work for
stick / high current MIG (don't use them for small 110VAC migs) they won't
work for tig or other low current applications that don't generate enough or
a bright enough spark for them to darken completely. Like I already said is
your eyesight worth 50.00 or 300.00 we are talking pretty serious here. You
only got one set. I run the Jackson EQC Executive series in my shop for all
my people, they are flawless, and some of them have as many as 6 to 7 years
of abuse on them. and have been places in new hoods 8 or 10 times from hood
damage.

Subject: [TheForge] auto-dark hoods
> One of my students gave me one of the auto-darkening hoods from Harbor
Freight as a gift. Upon removing the battery cover and batteries I found
that this particular lens was made by Jackson, though the hood its self was
made in China. I called Jackson and asked if this lens was OK for TIG, they
told me that it was not and that if I wanted to upgrade they would give me
$140 credit-on a hood of my choice. I decided on the EQC Executive and they
sent it out to me including the hood for the balance of the difference. I
would recommend that if you have a HF store in your area that you ask them
to let you look at the hood and check if it is made by Jackson, maybe you
could get a similar deal.
