Not sure if this will help or not, but here goes. At least for welding.
Long ago one of the old smiths I knew ( in his 80's) told me that weld
temp was when the steel and flux looked just like a pat of butter on a
peice of toast under a broiler as it started to melt. The color and the
swirls. So far that has worked well for me.
