terry- scotchbrite pads usually work just fine on copper. Just wrap it
around the pipe and work at it for a while. As for clearcoat, since money is
obviously an issue, why not try clear krylon spray paint? I have used it on
various metals indoors, and it lasts quite a while, is cheap, available, and
easy to reapply if needed- just masking tape up some newspaper where you
dont want paint. It is acrylic, so its about as non toxic as spray paint
gets, dries real quick, too.
