Unless you have a gas fireplace this is not a safe thing to try. Cooling the
smoke will increase creosote precipitation in the stack. This is a serious
fire hazard, definately not worth saving a few BTUs.
In fact, fire codes in most states have made heat exchanger tubes with
blowers illegal as they rob too much heat from the smoke causing increased
creosoting and stack/chimney fires
