Dan,

I've never tried to research Lucas Murray on the internet, but now that =
you
mention it I can't find a reference there either. This one might take =
real
books, which is how I know of him. The best reference being "The =
Mountain
Men and the Fur Trade of the Far West", a 9-volume set of mini =
biographies
edited by Leroy Haffen and published last in 1972. Practically anything
referencing the men of Bent's Fort in Colorado or Fort Adobe (Adobe =
Walls)
in the Texas Panhandle should have something in it about the man.

"G**d***" Murray was a frontier trapper and Indian trader working with =
the
likes of Kit Carson, William Bridger, Tom "Broken Hand" Fitzpatrick and
Jedediah "Peg Leg" Smith. He was one of the hunters employed by the =
Bent,
St. Vrain Company to keep their trade caravans in meat and proved to be =
an
excellent bullwhacker and muleskinner. His profanity is said to have =
kept
the oxen and mules in line and moving steadily west. "G**d***" was said =
to
have come from his mouth about every other word, so the Kiowa gave him =
that
name.
