one way to crush the coal into smaller bits is cut 44 gallon drum (or 
something similar) in half, chuck all the big bits off coal in there and hit 
it with the button end off a crow bar or a bar with a thick bit off plate 
welded on the end. when it's crushed down to the size you want tip it in to 
a coarse seave to get rid of the coal dust, all the really tiny bits and 
probaly the dirt as well.
