Her Q was about  the form of the fire i think. Jane, what you are trying 
to accomplish is to form coke from the coal which happens as the 
volitiles burn off around the edge of the fire, spread is controled by 
sprinkling water. The object is to form a little hollow core surrounded 
by burning coke that you continually nudge in from the edges. Enough 
coke below  and above is needed to keep too much oxy from reaching  the 
hot steel. A neutral to reducing  fire is what you are trying for. I'm 
not a coal burner so others will please correct this answer.........Pete F
