IF you cannot press it out, as a last resort, try cutting off the insert
and then cutting the remainder lengthwise in two places less than 45*
apart. Be careful so that you cut just the steel down to the bronze, not
into it. You should then be able to pop out the section between the
cuts. At that point enough tension may be off to pull out the rest. If
not you will most likely be able to collapse the insert into itself with
a small wedge thus making it smaller.
I use a similar routine to bust rusted fittings out of large steel
piping.
