Ralph,

If you're only using 5" of the stroke you will only use 5" worth of air to extend the cylinder but you would still have to fill the whole 20" with compressed air to retract (go up) wouldn't you?

You could also make a removable/adjustable anvil block to work on the big stuff and use your current hammer. As long as you hit the work or tool before you bottom out the cylinder. This way you wouldn't need more air and would run the same speed.
