Thanks all for the discussion and suggestions. I'm going to true up
the anvil surface just a little better, then shim the floor of the
dovetail with 1/16" copper.

Yes, indeed.
I'm not looking forward to making dies. They're huge. (Okay, okay,
the 30 ton steam hammer guys can stop snickering now. :-) I have this
idea that is just vaporware and blue sky at the moment. The dies I
have are half flat, half flat bevel -- industrial tapering dies I
guess -- about 8"x10" and not very versatile as they are. If I could
get dovetails machined in the dies to match smaller ones sold for
currently produced hammers, my dies would become sow blocks and would
remail permanently in place. I could buy one pair of flat/round combi
dies and then make others.
Lots to do, though, before I even try to decide if that's brilliant or
stupid.
