I've looked close at probably 60 anvils this year from 90# up to 460#. First off, Peter Wright made a great forged anvil that will give you a lifetime of service if you don't use a cutting torch or stick welder on it. 

Prices do vary according to your location as mentioned by someone earlier, but as a rule of thumb if you can get a usable anvil at $1.50/ # buy it quick. If it is $2.00/# make sure it is what you want. At $2.50/# it should be in very good to excellent condition.

But in the grand scheme of things, if you can't beat him down, so what if you have $20 ... $30....$40 invested in this above what would be considered a good deal. Ask this question. Do you really think you'll find a better anvil, you like more, for significantly less money? Go with your gut feeling.
