Not a web site but -- There's a really nice book called _Designing
Staircases_ by Willibald Mannes (van Nostrand Reinhold, 1982, ca. $40,
originally published in Germany as _Gestaltete Treppen_) that has lots
of pointers, details and ideas.   Numerous layout diagrams.  Some
closeups of custom fasteners and joints etc.  Lots and lots of
pictures of staircases, from elegant to parsimonious.

It *does not* address the problem we've been discussing on the list of
how to get the dang piece of iron to curve and twist right.
