The post purge also keeps the just deposited weld from oxidizing while still
at high temps (if you keep the torch pointed at the end of the weld) and
does the same for the tungsten so as not to have an oxidized electrode.

The long post purge is to help cool the electrode and tip. on some units it
is adjustable
