This response is off the cuff, and untainted by any real knowledge of or =
experience in the matter :^)
I'm reminded by this discussion of Francis Whittaker's Blacksmith =
Cookbook, in which he relates the trick to bending an angle iron. First =
you bend it 1/3 as much the wrong way, then bend it the right way. =
(Admittedly, that's incomplete info. See the book for exact instructions.)=
Two points come to mind here. A trick like Whittaker's MIGHT work for =
spiral railing.
Then again it might not for a reason not obvious. Namely, the WAY a piece =
of iron bends depends upon its shape. Grab a square bar by the ends and =
bend it and it bends ON THE DIAGONAL. I know just enough about this to =
make a complete bollux of any explaination, so I won't explain. Anyway, =
such a phenomenon might also occur with a railing of arbitrary cross-sectio=
n.
So, my final thought is that maybe the twist could be done first, then the =
curve could be put in afterwards. =20

A long handle wrench and a vice stand is the way I have doing it for a=20
flat helix,
If there is a better way I also would like to know...
