I suppose that depends on what you mean by "heat sink".  Johnson forge 
furnaces feature long "open" fireboxes to provide plenty of working room, 
but that long "open" firebox also allows a lot of heat to escape.  Close up 
that forge (as in Sandia forge or other gas forge with "doors" on the ends) 
and it's as good as any.  Remember, these forge furnaces are not meant for 
casual garage shop use, they're aimed at the production market.  So, what 
may not be ideal for many of us here, can be perfect for others.  Also, the 
relative cost of gas, natural or propane, to the value of the item produced 
is small.  That is, of course, that you don't spend 8 hours making a fire 
steel that sells for $10. <grin>
