That might be true Marc.
But if you coated the lenses with gold it would screen out the IR range.
I can put on my gold face shield and get so close to the fire that my hair
singes, but my face doesn't feel any heat at all.
Some part of the light spectrum is triggering the lens in the welding helmet
to darken.
If you were to look at the sun or a bright welding arc for a few minutes
thru a welding lens, that didn't darken because you covered up the sensor
ports, you would most certainly do some serious and probably irreversible
damage to your eyes.
