[TheForge] treadle hammer anvils

Without doing engineering calculations, I can't proove it, but I strongly =
suspect there would be a significant difference between the liveliness of =
a treadle-hammer anvil of solid steel and an hollow anvil filled with =
sand. If NOT, then why not put a 1" thick face plate on a Peter Wrong =
anvil, and fill the thing with sand? Should work as well as a Peter =
Wright, no?
OTOH, the same can't be said for a treadle hammer ram. Since the ram =
moves relatively slowly, loose weights in the ram tube work just fine in =
delivering a blow. It's not like a dead-blow hand hammer (filled with =
lead shot), because that head moves fast and the lead shot fall behind the =
face and catch up on impact, providing a prolonged blow (eliimnating the =
bounce).

That's an interesting point. I hadn't thought about the sand compacting.
