Ive built 2 hammers using thick walled 4" square tubing as the anvil. The 
top plate is a 5" square piece of 3/4" plate with a 1-1/32" square hardie 
hole. After welding the top plate on and filling with sand or scrap metal 
then sand, it works great for all but the heaviest blows. The back beam is 
4" square as well and is also full of sand. As mentioned in a previous post 
I use mine for tool work. The hammer head is the same but is filled with 
chunks of lead. I can lighten the hammer ( for transport) if needed by 
dumping out the sand and lead.
