I received this from the Guild of Metalsmiths and thought I'd pass it along
since some of you on this list know Tom and/or are familiar with his
magnificent work.

>On January 2,2003 a fire broke out in Tom Latane's shop. Tom received a
>call from a neighbor at 5:30 (I think AM) saying that there was a fire and
>the fire department had been called. The fire department put out the fire
>just as it was reaching the attic. The fire started in the north east
>corner where the charcoal was stored and burned through the wall.
>
>Tom lost hardly any tools. You can imagine what the smoke and water did
>to the shop and display rooms. Everything is coated with grimy smoke smell.
>
>Bob Walsh and Ted Johnson, along with other friends and neighbors, pitched
>in with the clean-up at the rate of two or three a day. Tom says that
>help came so soon that he did not have time to be depressed.
>
>The professional cleaners sent by the insurance company arrived on January
>6, 2003. Tom has almost finished cleaning his tools. The ceiling in the
>forge has been removed because of fire, smoke, water and stink
>damage. Probably most of the wall material can stay, but the joints need
>to be retaped.
