Larry--there has been a considerable amount of discussion on the
Junkyard forum about this area.  One smith, John Larson, is building
self contained hammers and he discusses several points specifically
pointed at your questions.  A search of the archives there will give you
a bucket of info.  Of course, a search of the Forge archives will
probably yield a lot as well.  Bob Patrick said a long time ago, "don't
waste time re-inventing the wheel, it ALL has been done before us,
probably by better craftsmen than we are..." or something to that
effect.
