You are not being a nuisance at all.  Many here profess to be open to
educating the public anyway.  Besides, it is more productive to pass on
historical information to you than to endlessly argue the arcane points
of which came first, DC or AC welders and how many True Path Blacksmiths
does it take to change a light bulb.  Now here's a radical approach for
you:  If this character is central to your novel, consider apprenticing
yourself for a year to a blacksmith doing work from the period that you
want to write about, then you can write from your heart, not some file
cards of bits and pieces of information...
