Dave FYI, the copper culture existed during the 3000-1500 B. C. time period,
there weren't any natives utilizing copper in the great lakes region during
the historical period, and certainly not any groups  of natives utilizing it
for several thousand years prior to that.

Jane, if your flexible with your time period I would suggest considering a
19th c. time frame for you upper midwest blacksmith. Any thing earlier than
that would be rather rare if your location gets away from the great lakes,
even near the great lakes there weren/t many smiths prior to the early 19th
century..
