[TheForge] clarification

The order of thing are as follows: First, a young boy would apprentice to a
master. He would learn the trade as he grew up and the master would also
expect him to sweep the floor, and provide all the other things needed to
keep a place able to be lived and worked in. He would also, thru this time,
build his tools of the trade. (As he learned how and what he needed.)
Next, when he had learned all he could from his master, he would travel
around to other masters and learn from them for some time. (Hence the name
"journeyman" for the journey he took.) When he decided he had enough money
or knowledge to do so, he would open his own shop, and that is when he would
be the master. This is my understanding of the learning of the trades in
days past. Obviously, not everyone is good enough or whatever to have his
own shop. Others would have taken over their masters place (in case of a
death or something) without going on any journey, but this is the proper
order of things, if the world were perfect.

Subject: [TheForge] clarification

> Thank you for all the responses, and corrections. :)
> I should have thought about giving a better idea of a place/period in my
initial post, but since I didn't, I'll do that as best I can now.
> The setting is similar to that of the Upper Midwest states (ND/MN/WI). The
time period is actually fairly flexible, but I'm thinking 16-18th century.
> I'm glad someone pointed out to me that you would apprentice first and
then later work as a journeyman. Thank you - I can see I've got a lot to
learn! :)
