Here is how I do it:

Pick the stock you wish to use for the handle.
Draw out, round up and point  the amount needed for the screw. About 6" as I
recall, experiment with a piece of soft wire.
Make right angle bend at base of handle material where screw material starts.
Start rolling into a tube shape that is the outside dimension you want to end up
with, in the 5/16" neighborhood.
Note which way you are "rolling" - right handed or left handed - It makes a
difference.
Keep evening it up with the previous turns till you reach the end, a closed
parallel coil.
Now reheat and evenly open up screw with a screwdriver (or tool you make for
this with a flat head like a screwdriver)
The screw should be even so it tracks behind the point and does not tear up the
cork.
Note: Always work as hot as possible.
Now forge the handle from remaining stock.
