High Relief Chasing with Shoji Asai, Japanese Master Craftsman
Professor Bill Fiorini and The University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse Jewelry &
Metals Department is proud to present a High Relief Chasing Workshop with
Shoji Asai, a
Master Craftsman from Tokyo, Japan. Asai San specializes in the creation of
Menuki
(sword hilt ornaments) and Kanaga (kimono pins) in fine silver, copper, and
other
Japanese alloys. He has worked in traditional Japanese metal arts since
1975. His work
has been shown in the exhibition of Japanese Traditional Art Crafts, and he
has been the
recipient of several awards for his work. Shoji is a full member of the
Japan Art Crafts
Association.
During the 4 days of instruction, Asai San will present demonstrations in
the
mornings, and supervise the students in the afternoons. Students will also
have the
opportunity to work in the studio in the evenings with their classmates.

Materials fees may include the following, as needed by each student:
Metal- the actual cost of any silver or copper that you need to purchase.
pitch bowl and pitch- $65
chasing tool blanks- approximately $50
Equipment that students should bring: eye and ear protection, small forging
hammers,
small ball peen hammers or chasing hammers, chasing bowl with pitch if you
already have
one, any chasing tools you already have, any 16gauge fine silver or copper
you already
have.
