Some reportedly pre-heat their anvil with a household type electric 
iron  salvaged from a garage sale.   Some use electric  magnet type 
car-block heaters.  As I  hammer hot steel on my "cold" 
anvil,  I  never  worry about damage to the anvil at sub-freezing temps, 
rather  the issue is  that a really cold anvil   drinks/  absorbs the heat 
from the hot steel  to be worked.
