Some reportedly pre-heat their anvil with a household type electric
iron salvaged from a garage sale. Some use electric magnet type
car-block heaters. As I hammer hot steel on my "cold"
anvil, I never worry about damage to the anvil at sub-freezing temps,
rather the issue is that a really cold anvil drinks/ absorbs the heat
from the hot steel to be worked.
