How "not fast" was it?  What I tried along this line was a hand-held =
hammer, and it was VERY "not fast".  So "not fast" that I could do more =
work with a 2-lb hammer.  No complaints about how hard it hit, though.

I did see a sesaw/counterweight style treadle hammer last weekend .=20

Upright, hammer arm was mounted at and angle to the upright, bush down on =
treadle, whack. Counterbalance returns the hammer head for the next blow.

Not fast not elegant but it will sure deliver a good whack. the anvil was =
adjustable in height to maintain a square blow .=20
