Thanks for all the input on the screw I'm looking for. I called Starrett this morning
and they make calipers that use the screw & nut I'm looking for. They use them on
their catalog #26 - Firm joint caliper. The nut is a .225-40 and sells for $2.80 and
the screw is a .225-40 Hex x .308long and sells for $3.75. Since the alternative is
making them, the price is dirt cheap. Still would like to find another source though.
Starrett makes this caliper in 5 sizes from 6" to 36".
The exploded view of Starrett's caliper shows it like Bob S. said, one leg has a
square hole in it and the other a round hole.
My "girlie" calipers so far are:
One that I copied out of a French (naturally) ironwork book and just uses the
woman's legs.
One is from an IVBA newsletter that was in there courtesy of Brian Gilbert--he had
found it on the internet.
The last one is the chrome plated lady that you see on the mud flaps of semi trucks.
I just straightened her out (don't I wish) and made her into a caliper.
I haven't made any of these calipers yet but will as soon as I get the joining method
determined. If any one has a caliper of the type we're talking about here, I would
sincerely appreciate a tracing of the shape of it.
