[TheForge] Forging press?

I bought Dr. Jim Batson 's book on building a forging press, and have
acquired some of the "fixings" like the drilled uprights to build a press
frame and a 5 inch 2 way hydraulic cylinder. I was able to watch Jim
Batson demonstrate on Kieth Johnson's press in Bemidji Mn a year or two
back, and Roger Degner provided me with a good UMBA tape of Kieth
Johnson demonstrating the forging press.
The verbal pointers that I have gotten about building a forging press
usually say something like "Start with a working hydraulic log splitter"...
There aren't lots of cheap used log splitters in the corn fields of North
Iowa, but I had seen new ones on "sale" in Harbor Freight catalogs.
The Harbor freight 50 ton shop press caught my eye a month or two back.
46768-2VGA . Then I saw it on "sale" for $600 and I thought hmmmm...
When I looked at it at first, I assumed that it might have an electric
motor to run the 2 speed pump, but it doesn't say anything about motor
size. This press might be a manual "jack" type pump like the HB 20 ton
press that they sell.
Without being able to look at one close up, it is a guessing game.
Thanks
Dann
