It seems to me that insulating firebrick is diatomaceous earth + enough =
flux to bind it together when it is fired.  Anyone know more about this?  =
I was wondering if we might have a short-cut (or cheap-cut) here.

If you want insulating firebrick, the construction grade won't do.  You
want the lighter ones that weigh 3 1/2 pounds, or less.  Try a ceramic
supply house.  They are used for building ceramic kilns.
